Model Solving Equations

Students will use balance scales or algebra tiles to model solving equations.

Accompanies Holt Course 2, Chapter 1, Section 11 Lab. TEKS 7.5A; 7.14A

Modeling solving equations by using a balance scale or algebra tiles promotes the concept that the same thing must be done to both sides of an equation to keep it 'balanced'.

Equations and Their Solutions

Accompanies Holt Course 2, Chapter 1, Section 10. TAKS 7.5B; 7.13A; 7.14A

Students will learn to determine whether a given
number is a solution of an equation.

Evaluate the side of the equation containing
the variable by substituting a given value
for the variable, simplifying the expression,
and comparing the answer with the
number on the other side of the equal sign.
If they match, the given value is a solution.

Representations of Data

This lesson is 3-5 in the HRW Course 3 textbook. The purpose of this lesson is for students to make sure they can convert any data from tables to equations to graphs and in any order.

Materials for each student:
graph paper
straight edge
colored pencils (optional)
create a worksheet page with grids of 10 X 10 (optional)

Algebraic Reasoning with M&Ms

Students will practice algebraic reasoning with M&Ms by extending patterns, creating multiple representations of data, and formulating equations from problem situations.
